Oh Shoot!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

A little over a year ago, I took up shooting again. I have always found it a calming form of relaxation. That may sound strange with all of the current hysteria revolving around gun ownership and our second amendment rights. But for me, shooting is a contemplative sport.

This morning on my walk, I pondered the similarities between shooting and our daily lives. And it doesn’t matter which of the sport’s disciplines be it shotgun, hand gun or rifle. It’s all the same. You either hit the target or you don’t. Once the bullet has left the barrel there is nothing you can do to change the outcome. Now I admit nothing is more satisfying than seeing a tight group of bullet holes on your target at 100 or 200 yards, or seeing your clay pigeon explode in a cloud of dust. But the fact remains, even the best marksmen sometimes miss.

A fired bullet or round of shot is yesterday. You either celebrate or learn and move on. Great marksmen understand the concept of a missed shot and do not let it affect their future performance. They stop, take a breath, and analyze what happened. Did they rush the shot? Was there a sudden gust of wind that took the bullet off course or blow the clay bird out from under their shot pattern? They evaluate, then correct their error, or adjust for the new conditions and squeeze off another round.

I realize comparing life to shooting in an over simplification but the principles apply. Our lives are an ever changing set of circumstances. Yesterday is our spent cartridge to either affirm us or to learn from. Today is where our focus should be. What did I learn from yesterday that will help me today and how to better prepare for tomorrow? Good businessmen, great athletes, and marksmen understand this very basic concept. They do not let adversity affect their future performance. They learn. They grow. They improve. They succeed. And you can too!

Live well.

When You Wish You Lose

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I guess there is no polite way to say it. “I wish,” is victim language.

How many times have you heard or said it yourself? I wish. I wish I could have a new car. I wish I could take a vacation. I wish I didn’t have to work here. I wish I wasn’t fat – in my case I wish I wasn’t so skinny. The lists are endless.

The words “I wish” are a negative imprint on your subconscious. Now when I say “I wish,” I’m not referring to blowing out the candles on my birthday cake. I’m referring to the words in terms of, “I wish, but I know it will never happen for me.” And there’s the rub. And that’s why it is dangerous.

The first word in any motivational speaker or high achiever’s lexicon is “action.” If you want something or truly have a desire to achieve something, make it a goal, develop a plan, go after it, and make it happen. Again the key word is “action.”

It is a lie to believe that any reasonable desire is out of your reach. It is a lie to think that you do not have within you the ability to achieve what you want or need. Take the steps. High achievers work from lists. There are several reasons for this habit. First, it helps them organize their day, helps them prioritize tasks in order of importance. They are more productive. But the most important benefit is they see their progress and accomplishments throughout their day. Positive reinforcement nourishes and builds their strength exponentially.

When you hear yourself say the words “I wish,” stop and ask the question. “Do I want this?” If so, change your mental and verbal language to, “I will have this,” or claim it as yours and say and think, “I have it.” Then take the action needed to get whatever it is you want or need in your life. Make a deadline. Make your list of the steps. And make it happen. All things are possible for those who believe and are willing to do the work.

Bet you “wish” you would have started this process sooner!

Live well.

Are you worried?

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Worry is caused by fear of a future event, generally an unrealistic fear. Some people are predisposed to worry and I used to be one of them. Until I conquered worry, it had been a destructive force in my life. Worry being rooted in fear, and fear, as I have learned, cripples by paralyzing, thereby causing procrastination. Procrastination enables our fears to become self fulfilling prophecies.

Positive thinkers and high achievers have disciplined positive attitudes as they navigate their daily lives. What they dwell on becomes the reality for them. Their successes appear to be effortless as they excel and thrive. There is a reason for their success. They anticipate and evaluate possible pitfalls then plan a stratagem to overcome obstacles. They don’t worry – they plan – they act – they overcome. Each success, in turn, strengthens and further motivates their confidence.

Worry is a crippling energy drain. Again, it is fear that paralyzes and feeds voraciously on itself and its victim.

You can counteract worry and fear by taking the following actions:
• Identify the fear that causes you to worry.
• Write down your fear. Step back and look at it as only words on a piece of paper.
• Identify the worst possible outcome. What is the worst possible thing that could happen?
• Evaluate the options. How many ways can you come up with to eliminate this issue?
• Choose the best option to eliminate the issue. It may take several steps, write out the plan.
• Take action. Execute the plan step by step.

Voilà, the fear is gone and you will sleep better tonight. It may take time, but as you move methodically through the steps of your plan, you will find that you have overcome the demon worry. You are no longer the victim, you are the aggressor. With success you will become stronger. When you overcome each obstacle you will become stronger and see only challenges, not threats. When you overcome each challenge you will become stronger and only see opportunities. Seizing opportunities will breed success in your life.

Enjoy your success today.

Live well.
